Infectious Disease

SydPath’s Molecular Diagnostic Medicine Laboratory provides a fully integrated multidisciplinary laboratory service focused on diagnosis and management of infectious diseases, pharmacogenomics and cancer biomarkers.

A wide variety of high throughput ‘state of the art’ real time nucleic acid amplification techniques provide rapid result for management of complex life threatening infections such as cytomegalovirus infection in solid organ and bone marrow transplant recipients, HIV and viral hepatitis virus load, multiplex detection of herpesvirus infections, HPV typing, polyomaviruses and bacterial sexually transmissible infections.

A growing range of molecular tests are being used to personalise medicine. This ensures clinicians rapidly identify people who are likely to respond or fail different therapies or interventions leading to a highly effective and efficient approach to treatment – all in real time.

The molecular diagnostic medicine laboratory is a purpose built facility and is a designated a Regional Reference Laboratory for the World Health Organisation (WHO) for the global surveillance of HIV drug resistance. Using tests which include nucleic acid sequencing and gene profiling, probe arrays, the laboratory can quickly identify patients who will benefit from an optimised treatment regimen.
